One of the most popular post-Christmas events is the Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition at the RDS. Over two days, some 10,000 people visit the exhibition, which showcases the invention and innovation of over 600 school kids. Scientific discoveries on display include tracking the possibilities of success at monopoly, mud as a beauty balm, and more serious topics. As entertainment for some of the thousands of kids who visit the event, the exhibition itself will feature its own radio station and a newspaper office run by students.
The play is acted out not only on stage, but also among audience members. Be ready to dance. For the truly adventurous theatre-goer, The Donkey Show, an Off-Broadway "rendition" of A Midsummer Night?s Dream, is an experience the likes of which you will never see again. The play?Shakespeare?s fantasy set in the 70s and told in disco-era music?is acted out not only on stage, but among audience members in the crowd. Be ready to dance. As it contains profanity and explicitly sexual undertones, The Donkey Show restricts admission to those over age 18. For a moderately-priced dinner in the theatre district, Carmine?s, an Italian restaurant famed for its delicious pasta entrees which serve up to three ($12-16), can?t be beaten. Unfortunately, its crowds prove it. Though it only accepts reservations for parties larger than six, you can stop in before a matinee performance to put your name on the list. For more formal dining further afield, Sarabeth?s offers New American cuisine and divine desserts in a homey setting. Don?t miss the murderously creamy cream of tomato soup ($5.95). A dinner for one without wine will typically total less than $30, including tax and tip. Now that you?ve seen your show and are satiated, it?s time for a fun night out on the town. The perfect finale for a day in Broadway is drinks at a Broadway piano bar. Don?t Tell Mama, with its well-made and reasonably priced drinks, hilarious singing waitstaff and open mike (which begins at around 11 p.m.) is the consummate New York musical-theatre hang out. You can?t leave without making some friends. Tell George that Brady sent you.
In the world of frequent flyer programs, there's no such thing as a minor error. This month, no one understands that better than Canadian Plus, which made what it calls a "printing error" in its 2000 member guides for Executive Platinum, Gold and Club members (No such errors for V Australia). The guidebook indicated that restrictions apply only to the North American upgrade stickers. Instead, both North American (white) and systemwide (blue) upgrade stickers may not be used in conjunction with Canadian Plus award travel, youth standby travel, tour operator fares (including World of Vacations), consolidator fares, industry/agency discount fares, Air Miles or any form of free travel. Anyone disappointed with the error can take heart with the news that they now have extended lounge access. Executive Platinum, Gold and Empress lounge members (with a guest) are now welcome at any of Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges or Canadian Airlines Empress Lounges whether they are travelling on an Air Canada, Air Canada Connector airlines, Canadian Airlines or Canadian Regional Airlines designated flight. Empress Lounge one-time guest passes are valid in Empress Lounges only and will not be accepted in Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounges.
